Steam Turbines
Products and solutions available for all kind of steam turbines used to drive generators, compressors, pumps and other mechanically driven machines
Purpose-built for steam turbines, Woodward’s powerful controllers have the performance, accuracy, reliability and protection required for today’s steam turbine applications and enhance productivity and safety.
Steam turbine controls
Depending on the application’s complexity and level of criticality, Woodward also offers custom programmable control platforms in simplex, dual redundant, or triple redundant configurations.
Steam turbine actuation
Built to handle steam turbine users’ #1 reliability problem — dirty oil — the new Woodward CPC-II features a robust design and self-cleaning action that increases reliability. The superb accuracy and resolution of this servo positioner make it ideal for improving steam turbine valve control performance.
The patented dirt tolerant and self-cleaning technology of Woodward’s simplex and dual-redundant on-line serviceable actuators ensure greater overall reliability of your steam turbine.
Steam turbine safety and protection
Machinery Protection Standard API670 requires compressor safety systems be used on axial compressors and centrifugal compressors based on application criticality. Woodward is a leader in delivering safety systems for industrial turbomachinery that allow users to meet this standard.
Woodward’s SIL-3 certifiable safety systems reduce installation costs and allow users to meet today’s safety system requirements for small, medium, or large compressor applications.
Speed sensors
Rotating machinery requires speed sensing for rotor control, monitoring, and safety.
For industrial applications, it is recommended that standard API670 be referenced, as it includes application guidelines for speed sensors applied on rotating machinery, including steam turbines, gas turbines, turbo expanders, and variable-frequency drives. Compliance to functional safety standard IEC61508 is increasingly required in new and retrofit systems.
These speed sensors are designed for use in SIL-3, SIL-2, or SIL-1 (safety integrity level) rated turbine or engine safety systems.
Case Studies
Coppus RLHA19 Turbine
Turner ECS was approached by Petroineos to replace the hydraulic governors on two Coppus RLHA19 steam turbines by new electronic actuators and speed controllers at an oil refinery in Scotland.
Steam turbine control retrofit
Turner MCS was invited by ENI to completely modernize their fifty-year-old Ansaldo steam turbine driving a medium voltage generator.
Process critical compressor control upgrade
Turner ECS was invited by SABIC to perform a control system upgrade at their petrochemical production facility in the south of The Netherlands.
Yara Sluiskil - Nitric Acid 7
Based on a decade long relation following several steam turbine controller, actuator and trip system retrofits, Yara Sluiskil awarded Turner ECS the order to integrate and modernize the complete control of their Nitric Acid compressor train.
Shell Moerdijk
After several technical and commercial meetings Turner ECS was rewarded the order to design, deliver and commission the upgrade of four existing critical steam turbine controllers, overspeed systems and I/H convertors.
